How to make the most of your One day in Berlin?

Berlin City

Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. So when I say this – it must be obvious to say that it is not possible to explore whole of Berlin in a day. However, if you are in Berlin and got only a day to explore, then this is the right place you have landed in.

How To Explore?

So Berlin is a really big city. For travel in the city, the Berlin Pass gives unlimited free travel on Berlin’s S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses, trams and ferries. But if you are only there for a day, then I suggest you to buy a day ticket for €8.60. There is also a seven day transport ticket, if you are staying longer. Alternatively, you can also explore the city through renting a bicycle.

What To Eat?

Berlin has a lot of Turkish people hence the kebab doner and pitta are really famous there. Also the currywurst is a must try when in Berlin. Few of the famous drinks of Berlin are Fritz-Kola, Club Mate or Moscow Mule. Also, the beers from local breweries are worth a try.

Places To Explore?

Reichstag / The German Parliament

Reichstag is The German Parliament and one of the most important buildings. You can visit the parliament and have a guided tour as well for free. You just need to pre-book your appointment online before the visit. It’s such a unique place to visit with so much of history, I definitely recommend visiting it for all the history buffs out there. You can book your desired tour from here. You can choose to attend one of the plenary sessions or a guided tour or just a visit to the extraordinary dome as per your convenience. Online booking is a must for any visit to Reichstag and you need to go through the proper security checks to go in. You need to carry your passport for verification.

Timing – 9.00 am to 8.00 pm

Brandenburger Tor / Brandenburg Gate

Brandenburg Gate is one of the most famous landmarks in Germany and a must visit while in Berlin. It’s walking distance from the Reichstag. During the famous Berlin Festival of Lights, which occurs annually every October, the gate is illuminated with light art and is really a spectacular sight to watch.

Timing – All day
Entrance Fees – Free 🙂

Holocaust Memorial / The Jewish Memorial

Just a short walk from the Brandenburg Gate is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial. The memorial was only built in recent years, from 2003-2004 to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the second World War. It is one of the important spots in Berlin.

Berliner Dom

Berliner Dom or Berlin Cathedral is located on the museum island. The grand history and incredible architecture is absolutely beautiful and worth the admiration. You can also buy the ticket to the top of the dome and get a view from above, I couldn’t do this as I was short on time. The best view of the cathedral can be seen from the park in front of it.

Weltzeituhr / The World Clock

After exploring the cathedral, you can head towards the Alexanderplatz to see the Weltzeituhr aka The World Clock. It is a fascinating structure showing the time from different places of the world. Tourist’s and locals also use this as a meeting point when smart phones can’t come to rescue. There is even a legend that states if lovers hold hands at midnight adjacent to the tower, they will be together forever.

Fernsehturm / The TV Tower

After you are done admiring the world clock in Alexanderplatz, you can also visit the TV Tower which is in the same area. The TV tower is visible almost from every point of the city. It is the tallest building in Germany. It is owned by Deutsche Telekom, and over 60 different radio and television programs are broadcast via the tower’s antenna. The broadcast equipment was renovated in 1990s and continues to work today. You can visit the observation deck for the 360 degree view of the city or also enjoy a culinary experience at the revolving restaurant in this tower. Check here for the tickets. You can plan your itinerary such that you can either have your lunch or dinner at this tower.

East Side Gallery

If you are a huge fan of wall murals and graffiti, then this spot is bound to fascinate you. Although East Side Gallery is much more than wall art. It is the part of the Berlin Wall with some art depicting the political state of the world when the wall came down. It has paintings by the artists all over the world.

After you explore all these places, if you are also there for the night, then make sure to hit the clubs. It is famous especially for its techno and electro clubs.

Other Places

Victory Column, Tiergarten, Checkpoint Charlie, Museum Island(for all the museum lovers), Hackescher Markt (for shopoholics), Charlottenburg Palace and loads of other places to visit. You can also take a river cruise across the city.

Hope this helps in planning your trip to Berlin, if you got any other questions – feel free to ask me in the comments below or hit me up in any of my social media channels. You can also refer my article on Magnificent World for more information on Berlin. Happy Exploring!
